KUALA LUMPUR: The administration of SMK Convent Bukit Nanas has thanked the government for extending the land lease of the 122-year-old mission school here.
“We are grateful and thank the government of Malaysia for extending the land lease for 60 years, ” said Lady Superior of the Society of Saint Maur, Sister Theresa Chua Siu Yan.
She added that the school s administration thanks Malaysians for their love, care and concern towards the well-being of Convent Bukit Nanas.
Sister Mary Theresa Chua was accompanied by lawyers Datuk Joshua Kevin, Damien Chan and Leonard Gomes. The support for the school demonstrated over the past days has certainly encouraged us, particularly the teachers who have toiled to ensure the children continue to receive a good education, she said in a statement on Thursday (April 22).

People are rallying to save a 122-year-old British-colonial school in the middle of Kuala Lumpur from city developers.

Save SMK Convent Bukit Nanas has gotten more than 12,000 signatures since it went up last night, calling for the need to preserve the rich history of the all-girls school’s building, which was erected in 1899 by three sisters from a Roman catholic institute, the Congregation of the Holy Infant Jesus.

Convent Bukit Nanas, a school established in 1899 is located along Jalan Bukit Nanas here, and as the school is seeking a stay against the authorities’ decision, its land lease is due to expire on September 6 this year.
