I look back on my career and i think the most consequential decision ive ever been involved in was the decision of the president being elected last year to pick the Supreme Court nominee. My colleagues back me up. The American People spoke. Today, we will confirm the nominee, the new president has selected. I think as we all know, this is a person of extraordinary credentials who will bring honor to the Supreme Court for many years to come. It is indeed a proud day. I also want to express my support for the strike that the president made last night against assads chemical weapons facility. I think the strike was wellplanned, well executed, was certainly more than a pinprick and sends a message not only to assad that using chemical weapons again is something he cannot do with impunity. I think it also reassures us that america is back in terms of playing a leadership role and tried to be constructive in a variety of different places around the world as well as a message to iran and nort
A senator thank you, mr. President. Let me first extend my thanks to chairman shelby and to Ranking Member mikulski for putting together a truly bipartisan bill. Mr. Murphy im honored to be a member of the appropriations committee. This is a difficult bill to put together but they did very good work in the subcommittee to make this a product that both sides could support. And so i thank them for allowing me to be a part of that process. Second, let me acknowledge the remarks that senator mikulski who noted that in many ways the world and the country has changed since this bill was scheduled to come to the floor. Our heartbreaks collectively in this country for the citizens of orlando and as ill speak in a moment, in particular in connecticut. Our heartbreaks for the people of orlando because we know in a very real way the pain that exists there today but we also know how that pain is really never ending, how the ripples of that pain are unceasing and unrelenting and they span generatio
Threaten our security. Those measures must involve some military action, and that military action will include intercepting intelligence and financing air superiority and air aid for our allies on the ground without committing massive numbers of u. S. Troops to that effort. That war must be pursued even as we pursue the war against terror and hatred here at home. But hardening our defenses requires this kind of action. And so we must commit as a body to stop the terrorist gap from continuing to threaten our security at home, as well as implementing universal background checks that will keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. We owe it not only to the memory of the children and educators at sandy hook and the countless innocent people who have perished since in the mass shooting that so preoccupy our attention, but also the daily shooting, 30,000 of them every year. In Downtown Hartford and around connecticut, no place is immune. No one is safe so long as there is this threat. T
He was going to get he was actually going to do an interview and had a little time, so he came by for a cup of coffee. We were sitting in my office that morning when we had the television on and watched a plane fly into the first tower of the trade center and i remember very clearly johns reaction. I said, did you see that . A pilot just flew into the world trade center. He said pilots dont fly into buildings that wasnt a pilot. And thats how it started. We went then to a leadership meeting. Shortly after that, thinking that it had to have been an accident, we turned on the monitors. We were going to begin our preparation for the days activities and work, and then began to watch the scene unfold. And i remember at one point, senator patty murray, who was sitting at the table, looked out and saw smoke billowing and she ran over to the window and she said, my god, theres smoke coming from the pentagon. So we all jumped to our feet and went over to the window to watch what little we could
To an undisclosed location. He recounts his experiences that day, from his aerial view of the pentagon to his description of the secret location for congressional leaders regrouped and determine how to respond to the terrorist attacks against United States.
