150 Wisconsin National Guard soldiers from Sparta-based unit to deploy to Eastern Europe April 21, 2021 4:57 PM Mike Tighe Updated: SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) About 150 Wisconsin Army National Guard Soldiers from the Sparta-based 107th Maintenance Company will deploy to Eastern Europe this spring. The unit, which also has detachments in Viroqua, Wis., and Camp Ripley, Minn., will mobilize to U.S. European Command in Eastern Europe to conduct maintenance and recovery operations to support Operation Atlantic Resolve and a multinational joint exercise labeled Defender – Europe 2021. The unit, which includes mechanics, production controllers, signal support specialists, supply specialists, vehicle recovery experts, armament specialists and a field feeding section will provide maintenance support to U.S. service members and allied forces in the theater.

The Wisconsin National Guard’s official birthday is March 5, 1837 – the date on which Wisconsin’s territorial Governor Henry Dodge commissioned Morgan L. Martin of Green Bay, Wisconsin, as a captain and the commander of the Green Bay Rangers volunteer company of mounted riflemen. The creation of the Green Bay Rangers predated Wisconsin statehood by 11 years, and the new civilian supplemented military force had a mission of protecting what was then the Wisconsin Territory.

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (Feb. 19, 2020) Mission and Installation Contracting Command Soldiers are helping lay the acquisition groundwork to ensure essential services and supplies are in place as the Army prepares for its largest European exercise in 25 years. Contracting Soldiers from the 901st Contracting Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas, and 904th CBN at Fort Stewart, Georgia, have been planning for and begin deploying this week to integrate to area operations of the 409th Contracting Support Brigade at Sembach Kaserne, Germany, in support of Defender-Europe 20. Defender-Europe is a U.S. Army Europe-led, joint, multinational training exercise demonstrating the deployment of a division-size combat force from the United States to Europe. Approximately 37,000 U.S., allied and partner nation service members are expected to participate, including about 20,000 Soldiers deploying from the United States, supporting NATO objectives to build readiness

One of the Wisconsin Army National Guard’s smallest units arrived safely at Volk Field before reuniting with their families Dec. 18 after an 11-month mobilization to the Horn of Africa and Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. The five-person 1967th Contracting Team completed demobilization requirements in Texas before state leadership greeted them with a homecoming ceremony different than anyone imagined when they left last January.
