Maryland-Eastern Shore (2-4), of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, actually had a 14-12 run in the middle of the opening half to get within 30-18, but Gardner scored 12 of the Cavaliers last 14 points before the intermission.
No. 5 Virginia (4-0) hosts Maryland Eastern Shore (2-3) in nonconference action on Friday, Nov. 25. Tipoff at John Paul Jones Arena is set for 6 p.m. on ACC Network.
UVA, SMU, Wisconsin and West Virginia will compete in the early-season event, scheduled for Nov. 20-22. The tournament will be played at Suncoast Credit Union Arena on the campus of Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers.
