pleaded guilty to lying to the f.b.i. that plea has raised more questions than it ever answered. mainly, did flynn cut a deal to cooperate with the special counsel? if he did, what information did he have? the severity of the sentence that is recommended tonight when it comes in by robert mueller will certainly begin to shed light on mueller s case. joining me now judge ken starr, former independent counsel under president clinton and author of the book contempt: a memoir of the clinton investigation. thank you for being here tonight. what do you expect will be revealed when we get a look at the sentencing document? thank you for having me on. martha: thank you. we are going to slowly get the story of the russian connection. the general pled guilty to lying to the f.b.i. that is a very unfortunate and tragic thing for the general.
special prosecutor, ken starr. this week marks the 20th anniversary of the star report that led to the impeachment of president clinton. so, joining us now is ken starr. he is the author of the new book contempt: a memoir of the clinton investigation. mr. star, great to have you here. hey, great to be here, alisyn. thank you. it s been 20 years. what took you so long to write this? slow writer. combination of circumstances. it was a milestone. and hillary lost the election. and so i felt given my own personal circumstances, it s sort of now or never. so i wanted to recall this. but you would not have written this had hillary clinton won the election? it would have been a different set of circumstances. i m an old-fashioned person who wants the president to succeed. i had no interest in raining on a parade, but i did think this was important to share the historical record, especially, as it turns out, it has lots of resonance, lots of echoes from yesteryear being heard right
that statute drove the dynamic toward impeachment. impeachment is hell. and we re seeing polls in terms of impeachment. and so i think we have reformed that under the aegis of attorney general janet reno, when this statute under which i was appointed expired, we went to essentially a restoration of the tradition that began with ulysses s. grant and had been the tradition for lo, those many years. we depend on the executive branch to engage in a certain amount of self-policing, including saying let s go outside to appoint this particular investigator to investigate the president. let the record reflect ken starr is in good health and indeed has authored a book, and there it is. the choice of the cover art does show it is a correction of the record. it is called contempt: a memoir of the clinton investigation by the man who knows, ken starr. counselor, thank you very much for joining us on the air. thank you, brian. on a wednesday night here in new york. coming up, three new po
