The Art of Leaving and its themes of longing and belonging, growing up Mizrahi in Israel, and reclaiming her Yemeni identity. She will be joined by discussant Rabbi Miriyam Glazer, Emerita Professor of Literature at American Jewish University.
Acclaimed Israeli author Ayelet Tsabari knows first-hand the challenges faced by immigrants, as the child of a Yemenite family in Israel and as an author writing about her homeland in English, her second language. Join her and Prof. Miriyam Glazer, as they discuss growing up Mizrahi in Israel, and refinding and reclaiming that identity through writing and extensive research into Yemeni culture and traditions. There is no doubting the power of a teacher; we never forget our best (or worst) or their capacity to change our lives. Over the past year, as many of us have attempted home-schooling , their job and the difficulties they face have never been more front of mind (I write this having been graded “rubbishest teacher in the universe” by my own six-year-old).

The need to escape during lockdown led a 21-year-old Stellenbosch University (SU) student starting her own bookstore.
Maryam Adams found herself needing some escapism during the national lockdown, and she rediscovered her love for reading, which led to her starting her own bookstore, The Bookstore Baby, in October 2020.
The Bookstore Baby is an online bookstore that is run via an Instagram page (@thebookstorebaby) by Adams, immediately recognisable by its brown paper-packaged books with some flowers and a handwritten note. “The personalisation is important to me as I enjoy having a meaningful interaction with each customer, especially because I am not always meeting them face to face,” says Adams.
