First AUKUS innovation challenge launches

The first trilateral AUKUS innovation challenge has launched in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom to find military technologies that solve electronic warfare problems across the alliance. All three nations simultaneously released the electronic warfare-focused challenge statement on Wednesday, with the Defence department’s Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) leading Australia’s efforts. The challenge kicks off a series of planned AUKUS Pillar II innovation challenges agreed by Defence minister Richard Marles and his US and UK counterparts, Lloyd Austin and Grant Shapps, in December.

Australia, US bankroll Google s new Pacific cable

The federal government will spend almost $80 million connecting smaller Pacific Island nations to a new trans-Pacific subsea cable between Australia and the United States that will be built by Google. At least nine countries, including Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu and Nauru, are are set to benefit from the financing, which totals $US65 million ($103.3 million) with a $US15 million contribution from the US. The South Pacific Connect initiative, announced on Thursday (AEDT), will link French Polynesia and Fiji with Australia and the US through two new subsea cables, named Honomoana and Tabua, while a new interlink cable will connect French Polynesia and Fiji.

Telstra snaps up cloud specialist Versent for $268m

Telstra has acquired Versent, a local tech consultancy that specialises in Amazon's cloud services for $267.5 million . The deal announced Wednesday will see the telco take full ownership in a bid to build out its Telstra Purple tech services business. Telstra also flagged its network applications and services business will benefit from the acquisition, that it expects to close within six weeks.
