Prohibition on slaughter of chickens at Penang wet markets makes traders see red

Prohibition on slaughter of chickens at Penang wet markets makes traders see red Pix for representational purpose only. PETALING JAYA: The ban on slaughtering chicken at wet markets led to a face-off between vendors and local authorities in Penang. Vendors say their customers prefer freshly dressed chicken to frozen ones but the Penang Island City Council, which announced the imposition of the ban this week, feels cleanliness has become an issue. In tandem with this grouse is the perception that all vendors must henceforth obtain their supplies from a single distributor, which the council has refuted. The more than 200 poultry vendors on the island have also claimed that the new requirements would put a dent in their business.

Be clearer about essential services

PETALING JAYA: Consumer groups have urged the government to revisit its criteria on what kind of business services can open during the movement control order period given the inconsistent interpretation as to what constitutes “essential services”. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) chief executive officer Datuk Paul Selvaraj questioned the government’s criteria, adding that it had to explain its decision as this had an impact on businesses and workers. “There must be a clear reason and there should be support for the workers. “Is the government going to introduce a package for workers who are going to lose their jobs? What is the support for them? Is the moratorium going to be extended?

THE #GrowWithCAP2021 campaign on the first day of 2021 by Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) drew support from people as far as Germany and India. CAP education officer O. Saraswathi, who is the campaign coordinator, said the campaign aimed at encouraging people to plant something on the first day of the year also saw more than 100 children from all over the country taking part. All the participants had to do was take a picture with their plants and upload it to their social media accounts, either Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, with the hashtag ‘#GrowWithCAP2021’.

Malaysia s medical profession in need of healing

A RECENT survey has revealed that 70% of the Malaysian doctors who were polled have been victims of bullying while serving in the public sector, and – shockingly – 17% of them have contemplated suicide. This is unacceptable because it shows how widespread the bullying culture is, and how severe. The statistics are worrying: about 75% of doctors responding to the Doc-tors Only Bulletin Board System (DOBBS) survey said that they are losing interest in their work, while 80% are worried. The media has also reported on doctors confessing to being bullied with one doctor stating that colleagues have quit due to “exhaustion and mental trauma”, not because they lost their passion.
