“They’re not as strong as they once were,”. MKM Partners’ Chief Market Technician, JC O’Hara said that, homebuilding stocks have been the “best charts coming out of the March 2020’s low” but now, their positive momentum is experiencing a halt as the trend turned ‘flat’ and continues to move sideways.
“If you look at the performance of a bunch of these home builders, they’re basically flat since August while the overall market’s up 10%.” said O’Hara in a CNBC interview.
However, O’Hara said that he ‘really likes’ housing stocks and he thinks that they can still continue to move up despite being in a losing trend and are not attractive from a technical perspective as of the moment.

The SPX NZ50 was down 0.6 per cent on the day. Smaller stocks outperformed as the NZX Small Cap index rose 0.4 per cent.
Real Estate was the only sector that was green on the day, finishing up 0.1 per cent, while Energy was flat. Technology and Financials were the worst-performing sectors on the day, down 1.9 and 1.8 per cent respectively.
Generator Retailer Meridian Energy was the best performing stock on the day, up 1.1 per cent. Dairy exporter A2 Milk and Cancer Diagnostics company Pacific Edge were the next best performers, each up 1.0 per cent. Contact Energy was the worst-performing stock on the market, down 3.3 per cent after the prior day s exuberant performance. Kathmandu Holdings was the next worst performer on the day, down 3.1 per cent.

Generator retailer Contact Energy was the best performing stock on the market, up 4.5 per cent. Cancer diagnostics company PEB also had another good day, up 4.1 per cent. Mercury Energy and Fisher and Paykel Healthcare were the worst performers on the day, down 5.2 and 3.5 per cent respectively.
