In recent years, the European Union (EU) has adopted some feminist principles in both its internal and external relations practices. Drawing on feminism in approaches to policy can help draw attention to the inequalities in the economic, political and social life of a society, in this case the EU. Furthermore, it has created increasd attention paying to the lived experiences of women, girls and other gender minorities at home and abroad. This move towards a greater inclusion of feminism has been informed by both internal drivers and external commitments, which this talk will unpack.
The European Union (EU) has been a remarkable experiment in multi-level governance, economic integration and multilateral diplomacy. However, it has also exemplified an important if not courageous democratic experiment. Never before has an equally ambitious democratic project been attempted beyond a nation state. Professor Jan Zielonka will try to assess the success and failure of this experiment. Although the European Parliament has acquired more powers in recent treaties, the EU’s legitimacy has not visibly increased.

Moving away from an understanding of Europe constituted as a cosmopolitan continent of nations, this talk will examine the implications of its imperial and colonial past.
