First Maori police officer to wear moko kauae in Queensland
Senior Constable Brenda Lee from Jacobs Well Police Beat has become the first Maori police officer in Queensland to wear moko kauae – a symbolic skin marking that has special cultural and spiritual significance.
Senior Constable Lee said moko kauae is a sacred female facial skin marking that has descended through the generations that pertains to one’s cultural and spiritual ancestry and to have moko kauae means to reveal who you are.
“It represents dignity, identity, worthiness, respect, integrity, genealogy, accomplishment, warriorhood, beauty, honour to serve others, you do not have to earn it, if you whakapapa Māori , it is your birthrite to choose,” Senior Constable Lee said.
A proud Maori woman has become the first police officer in Queensland to wear moko kauae, a sacred female skin marking that signifies dignity and integrity.

She explained the symbolic skin markings had special cultural and spiritual significance and were passed down through generations of women.

The officer said each Maori woman was inked with unique patterns that were only revealed when the design was complete.
