i really wonder what donald trump is saying on this phone call and what donald trump decides over the next few days. and robert costa, the point kasie hunt made, how would trump, how was donald trump square some of the things he said on the campaign trail where he separated himself from some of the paul ryan conservative orthodoxy, saying hey, i don t to want touch medicaid. i don t to want touch medicare. i don t to want touch social security. social security not really a part of this, but just basically a defense of the social safety net versus what s being proposed here. it seems a very different version of governess than what he was advertising. shortly before he got inaugurated, president trump and i spoke by phone, and he said he wanted to provide quote, insurance for everybody. and he talked about how other people in the party without naming ryan, have some philosophical ideas. he wants to cover everybody. and now he s embraced this mainstream republican plan. and so you re
nasty tweets. i think that s progress. as you noted, it didn t include much detail, didn t include guidance for congress. i don t think it accomplished much on the bipartisan front though that s also a result of democrats not responding there in the hall. yes, it s better. but let s remember a speech is just a speech. this is a state of the union speech for all practical purposes. they generally get positive reviews, mainly as you noted because the audience is heavily tilted to the party of the president delivering the address. that s not a random sample of the american public. rebecca berg, whether or not this is his pivot, or i m worried about using, we used it all during the campaign, we won t know until it all plays out, was it a speech or was it more. in the specifics he did give there was quite a departure from conservative orthodoxy. he talked about a trillion
burr, the republican from north carolina, over the weekend, there had been very strong corporation on the senate side in this inquiry. we ll see if it continues to hold. chuck schumer said today that senator burr is on notice, steve. all right, kasie hunt on capitol hill, thanks for that. there is also another major story coming out of the nation s capitol. this involved new priorities and the rebuke by the president of conservative orthodoxy. the trump administration today laying out it s blueprint for how much money the governmt should be spending and what it should be spending that money on. and top of the list for trump, a new defense build-up. this budget will be a public safety and national security budget. very much based on those two, plenty of other things, but very strong. and it will include a historic increase in defense spending to rebuild the depleted military of the united states of america at
earlier in the show, that is the new budget blueprint that the white house put out today. this is interesting. we talked about this with one of your republican colleagues there. a break here by this white house, by this president, with conservative orthodoxy. with paul ryan, on the issue of medicare, social security spending. this budget blueprint not calling for any cuts in medicare, any cuts in social security, of course, paul ryan and the republicans were on board with that the last several years with this path for prosperity. do you consider that a sign of progress, i guess, from your standpoint as a democrat? are you happy to see this from a republican administration? i m absolutely happy to see it. let me just tell you though, when i look at how much he wants to cut in terms of the billions, i believe it s over 54 billion, that certainly causes great concern. so he mentioned medicare, he mentioned social security. he didn t mention medicaid. and i m going to look very carefully
it was about half young people, which is usually the case. but the other half were kind of the excluded wing of the republican party and the wing that put president trump over the top. this is now donald trump s republican party, but it is, in terms of like conservative orthodoxy, economic nationalism, against free trade, that s heresy. it is interesting, because i was there last year and i was there with ted cruz, and it was hiss home audience, it was his home court. ted cruz was third in the straw poll and trump ran away with the straw poll last year. the thing with the trump speech, i came here last year, and i kichl here two years ago. and it seems like it was an firm consummating the relationship, i ve proved i m a conservative, this is a movement, i am fighting for you. do you think he s really a conservative? i actually think he s grown
