Conservation Minister Kiri Allan says the funding will ensure work done through Jobs for Nature is protected, even on private land. Volunteers and experts looking after the rescued baby orca Toa have set up a 32,000 litre pool as a back-up plan in case the weather worsens. The calf’s health was still stable, although it had now been in captivity for more than a week. “We are conscious this is a long time for the calf to be away from its pod and mother, and to be kept in temporary enclosures,” Angus said. The site is still off-limits to the public, but Toa received a couple of important visitors. Minister of Conservation Kiri Allan and Māori Party co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer dropped in at different times on Monday.
