Kent County Commissioners create new panel to address high-speed internet access

and last updated 2021-02-16 23:08:06-05 KENT COUNTY, Mich. — The Kent County Board of Commissioners are creating a new subcommittee focused on access to high-speed internet. “With so many people working from home, learning from home, doing all those kinds of things, it is not longer an option that people have access to this kind of high-speed internet,” said Ben Greene, Kent County Commissioner. “It is becoming a necessity.” Greene is chairing the 11-member broadband subcommittee. In addition to county commissioners, the panel includes stakeholders in the private and public sector. “We’re looking to identify the places in which those barriers exist and find solutions to address them,” said Greene.

The Huron County Economic Development Corporation has announced a new Huron County Broadband Committee has been formed to help assess the internet access needs of county residents. “The Huron County EDC is constantly working on ways to improve communities and business climate in the county,” said Carl Osentoski, the executive director of the Huron County EDC, in a statement. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen areas that could be improved on in our broadband internet in the county. Everyone is impacted by this, education, agriculture, small businesses, the list goes on.”
