After the past year’s racial unrest in the U.S., Grand Canyon University students took a creative approach when asked to come up with ideas for Black History Month events.
“We wanted to not focus so much on the negative parts of Black history. So, it turned into students expressing their interests and talents,” said
Donald Glenn, Director of the Multicultural, Diversity and Inclusion Office. “We wanted to let students express themselves rather than on information that is important but may not be the best part of history.”
This was not a failure,
Letting, a ragtag mob, bent on violence, storm the Capitol Building of the United States of America.
It was a purposeful act of domestic terrorism,
Incited by a sitting president who lost re-election,
No effective barricades erected before the assault
No forceful repudiation of the malcontents….white rage fueled by white privilege.
What we witnessed on January 6
th, in the storming of the Capitol of the United States was the result of the refusal to call to account the traitorous actions of the adherents to the Confederacy and the continued inertia that allows White supremacy

I would not be Congresswoman Barbara Lee without Congresswoman Shirley Anita Chisholm. Few people have opened more doors for women, children, African Americans and other people of color in elected office than Shirley Chisholm. And without Shirley Chisholm, we would not even think it possible for the first Black woman to serve as vice president of the United States. Nor would we have elected the first African American man as the first president of the United States.
I first recognized her impact when I attended Mills College in Oakland, California. I was a young, single mom on public assistance and food stamps at the time. I was serving as president of the Black Student Union, volunteering with the Black Panther Party, and raising two young boys. In the past decade, people associated with what is known as the alt-right have employed a strategy similar to that of progressive, antiracist satirists to advance a decidedly white supremacist, anti-Semitic, misogynist, and deadly serious agenda. As this article documents, the alt-right weaponizes irony to attract and radicalize potential supporters, challenge progressive ideologies and institutions, redpill normies, and create a toxic counterpublic. Discussing examples of satiric irony generated by the extreme right alongside those produced by the (often mainstream) left, this article pairs two satirical memes, two activists use of irony, two ambiguously satirical tweets, and two recent controversies pertaining to racism and satire so as to illustrate how people with very different political commitments employ a similar style with potent effects.
