cause of this problem, which is that twice at state universities has tripled in a generation. and you know what, angela, the president did get to that. and essentially called out of the states to say they re not doing enough to cut into outstanding student loan debt. he called out congress. tuition rates have risen over 60% in some of these states. it s astronomical. you re talking about folks who can t afford, they re just trying to make it by and get into the top 10% of their class. so it was great that congressman miller and congressman tierney have introduced this measure called the bank on students emergency emergency finance act. i know we ll see tweets over the
so much bigger than me. when i talked to my colleagues on the democratic side, and some republicans that have said this to me, we cannot operate like this where you ve got each one of us representing 700,000 people, andrea, and then you have one person decides that he s not going to hear from any of them. and he s going to basically run the committee like he wants to run it. and so, it was a very unfortunate thing, the way it happened. but this is not first time. he has shut off the mike of my colleague, congressman tierney of massachusetts and there have been a number of things he s done that go against the rules. we re saying, play by the rules. it does raise questions about how this committee can work. this is a really important committee. very important. involved in a series of highly partisan investigations. it doesn t seem to be any real
demanded an apology in front of the house, he had already called you and talked privately. but you have said, and i think admirably bigger than you, let us remember, congressman, chairman issa has cut off mics on democratic lawmakers before. that s right. watch what he did to congressman john tierney during a hearing about obamacare in december. watch this. now, if you want to ask a new question, go in a different direction. the gentleman is not in order, please. there is the chair. and i think we have an issue here and now you re going to shut the microphone off? yeah. and he cut the mic off. congressman tierney said now you re going cut the microphone off on me. he said yeah. so this seems to be a pattern that he just operates in his own kind of way like if i don t want
very serious matters and should have the utmost of credibility, suddenly we have lost it. now, do you expect him to publicly apologize in front of the house? i doubt it. but it would be a good idea for him to do that, reverend. basically, i think he the public needs to they saw him shut my mic off and now tierney s in public. they thought it was a public display. and perhaps he needs to do something in public to show everybody that he is indeed remorseful, if he is. you know, according to house republican rules, issa is supposed to step down from the oversight committee chair at the end of this year. but political reports quote issa says he doesn t want to let go of the committee. he is leaning toward asking leadership to waive republican rules so he can serve two more years. i mean, i ve got to go, but i have to ask you quickly, are we facing possibly two more years
actions. do you think issa got away with this? i do. i think it s very unfortunate that anybody could get away with this kind of activity. in order for us to function, ed, we ve got to have some type of a way we can get along. there has to be rules and there are rules. those rules must be adhered to. one of the main rules is you want to make sure that the minority has a chance to assert its views. and in this instance, chairman issa makes a decision, goes against the rules and basically shuts off the mike. that is not the first time, ed, he has done that. he did it to one of my colleagues, congressman tierney a few weeks ago. just shut it down. and i ree minded him that each one of us represent over 700,000 people, and that is not american. it s not way we do it in america.
