[screaming] hey take a picture. they re coming. now two neighbor said the man you just saw in the video was, allegedly, the same person who was arrested following the attack at congressman connolly s office in fairfax, virginia. obviously, we will keep following that. well that is terrifying. 10:30 in the morning you are getting your coffee, your morning paper in this happens, it s absolutely terrifying. i think it also, you know if the neighbors alleges the same person, i think it gives you insight to the mindset that this person was clearly in from before the attack even happened,
yesterday. in an interview with cnn congressman connolly says it was only the quick thinking of his staff that prevented many more in his office from being injured. the congressman notably was not there at the time, but he says that the suspect entered the office filled with an out of control rage, demanding to see him. here is more of what he told cnn s manu raju. i don t think there is a motivation. i think we re talking about real mental illness. if you are a member of congress and your office happens to be in the federal building, the courthouse, you re going to have security, but if you are in a commercial office space like me, you have no security. none. what could go wrong with that? well, we learned the answer to that question. reporter: and the congressman and many others on the hill are calling now for reassessment of the security provided to the members, their families and staff and district offices. in the meantime the suspect is facing charges of one count of aggravate
and that was the feeling of community members who actually gathered for a vigil last night. our affiliate reports that people prayed for the families of the victims, of the injured and even the for the family of the shooter. you had mentioned that the 18-year-old was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police, but also that there are just so many things left to investigate and left to figure out. so this community is really just mourning right now and waiting for more answers from police. we are expecting a press conference later this afternoon, kate. just the definition of senseless here. nat asia, thank you for the update. john? a u.s. congressman says two of his staffers are recovering this morning after being attacked by a man with meat al baseball bat. democratic representative gerry connolly tells cnn the attack happened yesterday at his district office in northern virginia. the staffers were taken to the hospital but have since been released. cnn has learned that the suspe
event for national capitol area food bank and learned that a man had come into our office with a metal baseball bat and asked for me. and when told that i was at an event, he proceeded to attack the young intern, who was at the front desk on her first day. and then when the noise and commotion became clear, others came running out of their offices, and he attacked my outreach director and hit her badly on the back of her head. one of my fast-thinking staff members offered to find the congressman and use that time to bring everyone into a safe space, call the police, and they were there within five minutes. he was engaged in altercation with the police and had to be tasered. and one of the police had a
connolly says police responded within five minutes. they took the suspect into custody after a confrontation with him that left one officer injured. the father of the 49-year-old suspect tells cnn his son is schizophrenic and hasn t taken his medication for three months. the congressman hopes this attack will lead to changes. we re going to have to reassess the security we provide or don t provide district offices. so if you re a member of congress and your office happens to be in the federal building, the courthouse, you ll have security. but if you re in a commercial office space like me, you have no security. none. and what could go wrong with that? well, we learned the answer to that question. and that suspect s father told cnn he has tried to get help for his son in the past. the 49-year-old was also known to law enforcement. he was charged in january of 22 with felony assault on a law enforcement officer, among other charges. the district attorney then declined to prosecute.
