limit in the house which republicans say they won t agree to without major spending cuts. with us right now is congressman jason chavitz. it was his idea to schedule that vote today and congressman cantor is making it happen. why do this now, congressman? well, i think it s important. president obama, secretary geitner, harry reid, house democrats have all said let s have a clean vote on the debt ceiling. great, let s have that clean vote. i think what we re going to find is there s broad bipartisan support for not raising debt ceiling without major systemic changes so in part, it s calling their bluff and saying let s vote it on that way. there s those of us that say we must make changes. here s what one of your colleagues said out of vermont. he s democrat. he said i ll support it but it s transparently a political maneuver. what his maneuver is about is playing politics with the debt limit. are you kind of saying that as well? no, i think what we are saying actually to the bon
billions, billions of dollars in reconstruction and relief efforts. usually disaster relief is an automatic yes vote on capitol hill, no questions asked. not in an era of the tea party. some republicans are insisting that any money that is appropriated for missouri or elsewhere must first be offset by budget cuts. let s bring in jonathan alan, who has written the story for politico this is an interesting political quandary because people automatically vote for disaster relief, but now not so fast. yes. what you re hearing from conservatives is that if you want to have that disaster relief money, you should be able to take it from other programs rather than adding to the deficit with what is known as emergency funding, a typical designation in budgets for disasters. congressman cantor, you heard claire mccaskill talking about him, the house majority leader, i ve heard he s given private assurances to lawmakers from affected states, not just this tornado, other tornadoes and the missis
fred over here chose not to have it. me, i ve got a plan. fred he uh. fred what is your plan? do i look like i have a plan? not really. [ female announcer ] only flood insurance covers floods. for a free brochure, call the number on your screen. there is no question we have to be careful about the way we spend federal money. but with all due respect to congressman cantor, i have a hard time believing that if this were in his congressional district he would be talking about how additional disaster relief would not be available unless we found some other program to take it from. claire mccaskill, of course, from missouri, and facing the devastation in joplin, these tornadoes will likely cost
for the first time in history of saying the united states would not pay its bills. it would default. that s just an unthinkable position. we have eric cantor who is the majority leader in the house who s now going to be part of the second gang of six. and he said when announcing he d be part of it, quote, i remain skeptical that the administration will take this effokmçuñó seriously, especiall after it all but ignored its previous debt commission and president obama had to be dragged kicking and screaming to consider minimal spending cuts for the rest of this fiscal year. i mean, is this just business as usual in washington?ç of course, the president gave a very tough speech on republicans last week as well. is this the usual in washington, or do you think things are so polarized that a deal is not likely to happen? well, they re very polarized, but that statement by congressman cantor, here s a person that says solve the deficit problem by cutting taxes and getting rid of med
been stocking it overseas to take advantage of lower tax rates you can bring it home for a low tax rate, a 5%, a 10%. does that have any life in congress if it actually gets brought newspaper legislation? there s a major movement for it. yes, congressman cantor, altria and philip morris benefited greatly the last time we did this. that is an idea we tried before. we put a fancy title on it. i didn t vote for it, called the american job creation act and it did not work. congressman, let s just respond to that, though, about the company s hiding their money offshore. people characterize it differently. there is say response. i think in fairness, the losses at ge capital, congressman doggett, good to see you. harold ford. good to see you, harold.
