I am president of the United States institute of peace with the critical moment to this serious conflict to threaten not of the regional political will security with the arrival of refugees in europe that there is 60 Million People displaced by conflict and 12 million are syrian. And estimates suggest what quarter have been killed in the civil war today. One of the pressing tragedies of our time United States has been the leading donor of humanitarian assistance over the last five years by growing more bloody and complex by the day the Global Community mr. Jett they Work Together to provide desperately needed civilian production to achieve a meaningful and lasting pay peace with the community and the commitment we read never again turn a blind eye let that systematic violence of human suffering come forward so i am honored to welcome to the u. Arctic nation. I wont go through the list of what other nations have in terms of their assets, but lets suffice it to say that our neighbors to the east in russia have over 30 icebreakers. Our neighbors to the excuse me our neighbors to well, it depends which way youre going around the globe. But our canadian friends the icebreaker capacity that they have are six. But its not just the arctic nations that have arctic capacity through their icebreakers its nations like china. Mr. President , think how far away china is from the arctic. India is considering building an ice breaker. Think how far away they are. It begs the question, why as an arctic nation are we not stepping up . So i am a he challenging my so im challenging my colleagues, think broader. I invited all members of the United States senate to join the arctic caucus and understand what it means for you and your respective states, the benefits but also the obligations. First, i thinkshould be clear that we believe the systems are safe. One of the safest mode of travel we have available to us in this day and age. Real also believe very strongly there are steps that need to be taken in order to address the safety, not just of the general public, but the employees who work for these diseases. There is no question that when youre dealing with an aging infrastructure and the needs that are required to maintain that infrastructure, employees will be working in Hazardous Conditions that can make for an unsafe situation, but there are steps that the Transit Agency has taken. I know from my own experience we focus closely on making sure that our operators have appropriate training, tools, protocols and place to map the safety of these employees. But the reality is, as long as it will take to fix this problem will require more workers to work environments where it could be a more dangerous situation that if it were invested in good repair. Tonight donald trump in something of a hostage video recorded remarks written for him on a teleprompter. He denounced the violence that he incited. And in a shocker to his base, he admitted hes out of there 13 days from now. I would like to begin by addressing the heinous attack on the United States capitol. Like all americans, i am outraged by the violence, lawlessness and mayhem. I immediately deployed the National Guard and federal Law Enforcement to secure the building and expel the intruders. America is and must always be a nation of law and order. The demonstrators who infiltrated the capitol have defiled the seat of american democracy
