Let s talk about the Senate, especially now that Mitch McConnell has had to move down the hall to the Minority Leader s office for at least two years. For a long time, I was firmly against doing away with the filibuster. (I was always open to the notion of going back to actual filibustering. Make the bastards stand there and talk, by god, for as long as they can endure it.) I have changed my thinking, mostly on what s-good-for-the-goose grounds, but also because I saw McConnell weaponize the practice in order to hamstring Barack Obama s presidency without leaving a whole lot of fingerprints. I m still not entirely sure it s a good idea, given the nature of what future Republican senators likely will be. But it s clearly an issue at the top of the calendar for the new Democratic majorities in Congress. From
