of cardinals, the head of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith. even when he was in munich and he was the archbishop there, he was someone who was extremely active. and i think one of the interesting things that we ve been is that as a pope he was more introverted then for instance john paul ii was who was this extremely towering figure. we also have to keep in mind at the beginning of his papacy when he still had a lot of power himself he of course took that office when he was already 78 years of age. and one of the interesting things that he said shortly after becoming the pope is he said that when he was in the conclave after john paul ii passed away and it was sort of looking as though increasingly as though he might be the one that would be chosen that he begged god not to do this to him but it was one of the few times that god did not listen to him in this case, as he put it. but i do think that after he became pope he did try to continue some of that legacy of jo
vatican council and working in the vatican, in the congregation for the doctrine of the faith, as pope and pope emeritus. when you look out and see all the people that knew him and the impact he had for decades on the catholic church. very profound moment for me and for so many catholics. is it as you would imagine the service would unfold? it is. you know, one of the most beautiful things about these masses is that this is essentially the same kind of mass that any catholic would have, right? obviously it s not in saint pe peter s square but the liturgy, the eucharist, the prayers, the final commendation. in death benedict is like all of us, like all catholics and the sacraments, this is a sacrament, funeral mass, is something that unites us all. it s another sign of humility that this is the same kind of mass that all of us would have.
church. reporter: and, you know, what s really important about that messaging is that pope benedict really did a very complicated legacy. he was a lot of people blamed him for a great deal of the cover up of the clerical abuse, not while he was pope so much but while he was head of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith. pope francis we re hearing trying to change the messaging back to his dedication of his life to the church, all of the things he did, and even during his ten years of retirement he continued to write, he continued to have audiences, he continued to give interviews, he was very influential and didn t get in pope francis way. i think what we re seeing a pope francis saying, okay, let s focus on the good that this pope did and celebrate as they celebrate his his life and his legacy. barbie nadeau reporting, thank you so much. bryan kohberger the suspect
