Killeen council rejects resolution to fly Juneteenth flag at City Hall

The Killeen City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously against a resolution  that would have allowed the city to fly the Juneteenth flag at City Hall June 18-20. The NAACP-Killeen Branch spoke out against the resolution during citizens comments, expressing concerns that it would open Pandora’s box and allow other flags to be flown at City Hall as well. “Flying the Juneteenth flag would make it where other groups and organizations could make the same request of their flags to be flown. And yes, I’m even talking about the Confederate flag or the LGBTQ flag,” Samuel Powell said during citizens’ comments on Tuesday. Powell made the comments on behalf of NAACP-Killeen Branch President TaNeika Driver-Moultrie.

Although this legislature may have halted any immediate plans to relocate the statue it doesn t change the tumultuous history it has left behind. How does that sound to a Black child? What message does it send to a white child? Honoring the Confederacy is an ongoing outrage to fellow Texans and an incitement to violence, from small insults to deadly force. Continuing to celebrate this holiday perpetuates the culture of oppression of fellow Texans. This issue is back before the Texas Legislature this session. “These images and words (honoring the Confederacy) give some people the courage and even the audacity to do what they do to people of color, because it emboldens them,” state Rep. Jarvis Johnson of Houston, who in 2019 authored a bill to remove this holiday, told Texas Monthy in July.

His previous attempt in the 2019 session never made it to a vote. “This is a part of our past that should be relegated to the history books and not celebrated,” said Rep.
