Sgt Ron Helus posthumously awarded Congressional Badge of Bravery

View Comments Ventura County Sheriff s Sgt. Ron Helus, killed in the 2018 Borderline mass shooting, was posthumously presented the Congressional Badge of Bravery on Tuesday. This honor is reserved for only the most exceptional acts of bravery carried out in the line of duty, said Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Westlake Village, when presenting the award to Helus s widow, Karen, and son, Jordan, hugging both. There is no question that Sgt. Helus earned it. Brownley and others said Helus actions the night of the shooting, which claimed 12 lives, saved the lives of many others. The award was presented during a ceremony at the Healing Garden, which honors the victims and survivors of the shooting, at Conejo Creek North Park in Thousand Oaks.

Borderline Bar and Grill to be demolished after mass shooting

Print Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, the site of a mass shooting that left 12 people dead in 2018, will likely be demolished next month at the request of the property’s owners, city officials said. The building, which has housed some kind of restaurant that has been a gathering spot for residents for nearly 50 years, withstood the massacre and later a prolonged shuttering as the coronavirus closed bars and restaurants throughout California. But the city says the owners no longer wish to maintain the building. “It was a place where people gathered for friendship, companionship, love and then, ultimately, terrible tragedy,” Thousand Oaks Mayor Claudia Bill-de la Peña said by phone Friday. “Once this building is gone, it will be painful for our community not only for the Borderline families and survivors, but for the community at large.”
