janette aguero may have cheated death two apartments away. we walked out, and the apartment is the 04 line is sheered in half, and it s, like, just gone. reporter: gone, but why? one night earlier, pablo rodriguez s mother heard something. she just had told me that she had woken up around 3:00, 4:00 in the morning and had heard some creaking noises. reporter: forensic inspectors now in the rubble wonder if something failed underneath the building. to support its weight, the tower s builders had to drive concrete pilings deep into the sandbar. one coastal threat, salt water intrusion. it can seep into the concrete, corrode the steel inside the pilings and, worst case, shift the base of a building. after the calamity, officials reportedly saw a hole opening up under the garage. they tried to see where ther source, where the water was coming from. and that penetrated into the columns, the foundations. reporter: janette aguero says
high, but this is a first look at this right now. and you can just see why it s so unsecure, because some of these concrete pilings that you re looking at could easily slide off of the building right there and easily slide onto rampart street. this is probably why this is going to be such a construction hazard for so long and why you can expect roadways to be closed for so long. if we pan the camera a little bit left, you can see, this is that yellow crane that the governor and chief mcconnell were talking about that s unsecure. you can really see it leaning right here compared to the other one. it is unsecure, they tell us. basically, it s our understanding, what s holding it up is the pile of rubble underneath it. so, it s a gigantic crane that if it fell, it looks like and i m not an engineer, but it looks like it would hit the sangor theater. it s that big. and if you look at the back side of the building over here, you can see these slabs of concrete right here. the governor sai
so they used my driveway, my yard as boat ramp to pull everybody out from the back. now, another big item to update you on, nine barges broke loose from their moorings in the san jacinto river during the height of this storm, and they just went careening down the rising river. two of the vessels vessels actually struck both the east and westbound bridges of interstate 10, the major u.s. interstate and artery that runs east west connecting cities like houston, beaumont and others. the u.s. coast guard says that structural damage is being assessed, but you can see how those barges are just sort of wedged up under the concrete pilings there. that major stretch of interstate will be closed for the foreseeable future, especially if there was a lot of damage done. jon, they have to get in there and repair it all.
