trace. trace: jonathan live on our southeast lawn. thank you. trace: our cameras have followed the rebuilding of the world trade center for a year and we have witnessed remarkable progress. the result of a lot of hard work, time, and money. tonight a look at how police are protecting that investment and the thousands of visitors and office workers who will soon fill the area. rick leventhal spoke with the new york police commissioner and has more from our new york city studios. rick? security has been a major concern at the world trade center site since the start of the rebuilding process. police actually prompted the architect of one world trade center to change his original design, moving the building further away from the street and adding a 20-story concrete base to protect it from potential car bombs. the city is now putting more than 200 officers on patrol in
9/11 memorial, including the placement of the victims names. the names previously were displayed some 30 feet below us. behind the water fall. and it was always scene seen as a profound moment walking up to this threshold that separates the living from the dead. shepard: security and money concerns forced him to move everything above ground. i feel that the design in many ways has been enriched by bringing the names up here. the design is all about addressing constraints in any project. and usually the constraints are, you know, very simple, time and budget. on a project like, this the constraints are much greater. shepard: very great. the planners are still making smaller tweaks all the time. earlier this year they dropped plans to install a special type of glass effort concrete base of one world trade center and even the name of ghalgd has changed. in an attempt to make it more marketable to companies around the world they won t refer to freedom tower just address one worl
outside world should care. at the school, a woman hugged us and said, i can t believe you have come all the way from england for this. pulling together two behind the school gym delicate work this, the bureaucracy of death, identifying bodies and sending them on for their funerals. this is a small town. they know these people. these nine more bodies, this time from a building just next door to the high school, the old people s home. this man is a restaurateur in town or used to be. as he put it, there is nothing left now except the concrete base. they re shouting, run, run. and not very politely either. it s another tsunami alert. nothing happened here, though. in fact there were a couple of tidal waves a little further up the coast. and look at the faces in what s left of this town.
