Rock Hall squatters to get DuraVilla houses

Some of the squatters living in Rock Hall, St Philip stand to benefit from the partnership between the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and Guyanese manufacturer DuraVilla. Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance Dwight Sutherland said on Wednesday that some of the hardwood prefab houses arriving from Guyana later this month will provide housing solutions for the Rock Hall residents who will be relocated to Concordia Gardens, Dodds, St Philip and other areas.“Rock Hall relocation would see some 227 persons being relocated from that site. We have started the process thus far. We have moved seven persons. We have built some 26 houses, in addition, so that makes some 33 persons that we will move before the end of this financial year. In addition to that, we have acquired land at Dodds in St Philip, what we call Concordia Gardens North, where we are now carrying out infrastructure work,” he said.

Boom coming - Barbados Today

Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance Dwight Sutherland today promised that a housing boom is coming to Barbados as he outlined several housing projects across the country to take residents out of squalor.Providing an update on those projects, some of which have already started, Sutherland explained that Government was keen on moving residents from unsafe environments.“We need to move with haste and we have no time to waste and persons telling us we [are] too hasty. When you have people living in squalor we have to move with alacrity,” he said.Sutherland was introducing a resolution in Parliament on Tuesday, for the acquisition of three parcels of land – two in Kensington New Road, St Michael totalling 11,480 square feet, and one in Beckles Land, New Orleans totalling 37,529 square feet.

Housing plan on stream - Barbados Today

Cabinet is on course to stamp its approval on the National Housing Corporation’s (NHC) purchase of 350 homes from Guyanese manufacturer DuraVilla for $20 million by next week, officials revealed on Friday.In an update on Government’s housing revolution to provide 10 000 homes over the next five to six years, NHC General Manager Ian Gill and the corporation’s resident planner Raymond Lorde said the programme was in full swing.   “That is confirmed. We are preparing the contractual arrangements, but as you know Cabinet must approve that we do the order. The monies for this will come from the housing credit fund,” Gill told reporters at a special mortgage fair hosted by the NHC for the island’s security forces, at the Police Sports Club, Weymouth, St Michael.
