Two sheriff’s deputies in Texas were killed in a shootout in Eden on Monday night over a dog complaint, according to reports. Concho County deputies arrived at a home on the 100 block of Bryan Street in Eden, Texas, to respond to a complaint about a dog around 8:20 p.m. Monday, KSAN/KLST reported, citing an update provided by the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. The alleged gunman 28-year-old Jeffrey Nicholas led deputies on a short foot pursuit and barricaded himself in a building. A standoff resulted in gunfire being exchanged, KLST/KSAN reported. During the investigation into the complaint, Nicholas was contacted and an altercation broke out, the outlet reported.

The confrontation escalated into a gunfight after police arrived. Witnesses at the scene recounted hearing 10 gunshots after law enforcement yelled, Roll your window down and put up your hands. A third victim, an Eden city employee, was reportedly shot in the stomach and rushed to a local hospital. Nicholas was said to have barricaded himself inside his home after a brief pursuit with officers, and the standoff lasted for about 30 minutes, according to KTXS.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on May 10, at approximately 8:40 p.m., Concho County deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Bryan Street for a dog complaint.   Two deputies and an Eden city employee arrived on scene shortly after. While making contact with an individual at the residence, an altercation occurred which quickly escalated to gunfire.  As a result, two Concho County Deputies were fatally wounded and the Eden City employee was critically wounded.  This is an ongoing Ranger investigation and a more detailed statement will be released in the near future.

Authorities did not immediately identify the victims. The deputies  bodies are to be escorted to Lubbock on Tuesday, where autopsies will be performed.
