Important steps for transforming toxic molecules in air at low temperatures

Credit: S. Dukhovnikov Air pollution from fuel combustion is one of the greatest environmental problems, especially in urban environments. In densely populated cities, the presence of nitrogen oxides, very small carbon particles, and carbon monoxide (CO) in the air seriously harms the human health and increases mortality. A collaboration between researchers from the University of Barcelona and from the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk (Russia) opens the way for reducing emissions of automotive pollutants. In a recent study, the scientists present design principles and catalyst syntheses to transform toxic molecules in the air at temperatures below 0?C.

ModMol the new app to observe molecules in 3D

Credit: Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry of the University of Barcelona (IQTCUB) The Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry of the University of Barcelona (IQTCUB) launches the app ModMol for phone devices, which allows the visualization and editing of molecules in an augmented reality environment. ModMol creates a three-dimensional molecular representation of organic and inorganic systems and biomolecules. At the moment, it works with 115 molecules on which it can offer general information such as the chemical formula or its properties. Among other things, it can find the structure of the acetic acid, cholesterol and caffeine, as well as polymers, carbon nanotubes and proteins. The database of compounds is updated constantly, and its aim is to include significant examples of each of the groups of the most relevant chemical structures.
