He skippered Compton & Shawford for 25 years before hanging up his boots in 1998, aged 70. Derek was one of three talented sporting brothers in the Winchester area. With Saints legend Terry Paine as a teammate, he helped Highcliffe Corinthians win the Hampshire Junior A Cup and was also a useful table tennis player. His long cricketing career with Compton & Shawford began, aged 19, in 1947. During his period as captain, the team scooped the HCL South Wilts Division 1 title in 1976. He was a competitive player who put 100 per cent into his game. But as soon as stumps were drawn, he would be first in the bar, the life and soul of the party, reeling off amusing stories about the game he was passionate about.
