about that. but even within the last 15 years, we have different incidents that happen for example, in 2001 at auburn university, beta about pheta about phi had members that were dressed up as klan members and they put a noose around a neck of a person dressed in black paint. yeah, i remember that. in 2010 we had a compton cookout by one fraternity where they told people to come dressed in gangster paraphernalia to emulate, quote, unquote, crips and bloods. in 2013 a racist mlk party at arizona state where they had watermelon cups. let me ask chelsea this before we run out of time because clearly you re right, this has gone on and on and on. but i think this oklahoma situation and frankly because of unheard has brought it to where the nation is dealing with it. chelsea, though, today the
feel like the act was harmful in itself and actions need to be taken to ensure that something like this doesn t happen again because it does affect communities on our campus and it does affect the social and academic welfare of the students on campus. sara, what about you? not only did the story break that it was a minority student that did hang that noose up there in the library. now there s talk that it was possibly a black fraternity boy that encouraged the frat, to do this compton cookout, dress ghetto style. either way it s totally offensive, but does that change the discussion here, what s happening on campus if indeed it turns out that minorities are involved with these moves or these incidents that are highly insensitive? you know, i think one of the things that as a scholar of ethnic studies i constantly try to remind people is that racism
all right. nothing wrong with a barbecue. how about a compton cookout? sounds like a family get-together until you realize what some desensitized kids were up to. get, this students at the university of california san diego celebrated, and i use that word very loosely, black history month with a party off campus. that party titled a compton cookout. a facebook invite promised a taste of life in the ghetto and had chicken and watermelon on the menu. could you be any more stupid? campus administrators now looking into this. meanwhile another invite on another facebook page. this one asking for your participation in getting these students reprimanded. teachable moment? well, the chancellor is planning a teach-in next week to discuss respect and civility. a popular italian cooking show host is stewing in his own hot water right now.
