NCDEQ releases data on Colonial Pipeline spill in Huntersville

State Sen. Natasha Marcus - (D) NC - District 41 said. Sen. Marcus said no one yet knows exactly how much gasoline has spilled. In its release, NCDEQ said it has given Colonial until April 26 to file an accurate report. “Colonial is required to provide a revised Comprehensive Site Assessment (CSA) by April 26 in response to the February Notice of Continuing Violation, which identified 22 deficiencies in Colonial’s CSA and directed Colonial Pipeline to extend residential private well sampling radius an additional 500 feet,” the release said. Sen. Marcus has also taken action, filing Senate Bill 549 which aims to improve pipeline safety, by providing funding to the NCDEQ to allow for state-level monitoring. As it stands currently, North Carolina relies on Colonial Pipeline for monitoring.

State Orders Colonial To Test More Private Wells Near Huntersville Gas Leak Site

North Carolina environmental officials have ordered Colonial Pipeline to expand testing of private wells around the site of a massive gasoline spill last year in Huntersville. The expanded testing is among 22 corrective actions ordered by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. The DEQ says Colonial s 1,600-page Jan. 20 Comprehensive Site Assessment doesn t have enough information to determine the full impact of the incident. “We will continue to hold Colonial Pipeline accountable for its actions and response to the largest gasoline spill in North Carolina’s history,” Michael Scott, head of the DEQ s Division of Waste Management, said in a press release. “The Comprehensive Site Assessment lacks critical information necessary to determine the full extent of the impacts of this event. This information is crucial for the protection of public health and the environment.”
