Good afternoon, everybody. I want to welcome everyone to this afternoons panel. Public history and public memory, talking about slavery at president ial plantations. Im jennifer morgan, im a professor of history at new york university, where i work on colonial History Office enslaved people. Im very excited to be part of this afternoons conversation. Though my role here is primarily to facilitate and to learn, the presenters here have all spent their careers working in public history and have been at the front lines of important efforts to situate the president ial plantations back into the history of slavery or to situate slavery back into the history of the president ial plantations. Im not entirely sure i went back and forth on how to say that. Im not entirely sure is the right way to say it, but what i think is the crucial thing to say is that we are considering the processes that have erased the obvious location of the enslaved in the histories of the presidencies and everyone her
I accept london breed as mayor until the election. Some have been really progressive that spoke out about the potential possibility of white men as caretakers. I cannot support a socalled neutral party. All members of the board of supervisors came together in 2017 to support mayor breed for board president knowing she was a heartbeat away from mayorship. Now we have our first woman of color as mayor and they want to snatch it upon. Many large municipalities in my home state of pennsylvania have supervisor or mayor on an interim basis. Im a far lefty granola girl that locks horns with moderates. That will happen in the future. And today is not one of those days. I would kindly support women of color. It should be decided by voters and not the board this berniecrat said, let london breed. And i do support supervisor ronens immigrant supplemental. Im a big believer in racial and immigrant justice. So thank you very much. Acting mayor breed thank you for your comments. Next speaker, please
Contract exclusivity provision issuing a permit for ebikes for the others there. Our signing the agreement did not preclude us from issuing our permits legally. Its just an agreement acknowledging our ability to issue this oneebike permit not specifying who the provider would be without compromising the exclusivity clause. That was the resolution of the dispute resolution process that was invoked i dont remember fit was invoked by motivate or ntc. Throughout the process we were communicating closely with folks in the Mayors Office because the whole contract came about through the Mayors Office and approved by the board of supervisors. We wanted to make sure we were keeping in line with the policy intent of the motivate contact to be the regions bike share provider recognizing the industry had significantly change from 2015 to where we were in 2017. So the time lag from the signing and the authorization of the single permit and the notification to the rest of the providers that that was
To situate the president ial plantations back into the history of slavery. Or to situate slavery back into the history of the president ial plantations. Not entirely sure. I went back and forth on how to say that. Im not entirely sure which is the right way to say it. The crucial thing to say is that we are considering the processes that have raised the obvious that heavy raced that have erased obvious location of the enslaved in the histories of the presidencies. Everyone here on this panel, and many of you in the audience are involved in efforts that precisely do not assume slavery is some sort of addition or add on to the president ial histories, but the two are inextricable. To that end im excited to hear each of this afternoons speakers talk about the work they are undergoing at the president ial plantations. I will introduce all of them now in the order in which they will speak. We planned the presentations to allow for significant time at the end for the panelists is to panelist
Lone gunman opened fire Randall Smith now among the dead. His death comes among the four marines killed. On friday their bodies arrived at Dover Air Force base. The youngest marine, 21yearold Lance Corporal wells. He is probably the best kid you could ever meet. The three others, highly decorated marines. As flags fly at halfstaff in chattanooga, the memorials grow. Being a veteran i wanted to come by and pay my respects to my fallen brothers. Reporter meanwhile new details are emerging about the gunman and the attack. Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez was armed with an assault rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun and a 9 millimeter pistol.
