AMHERST A fraternity at the University of Massachusetts is on interim suspension following reports that its members may have hosted large gatherings in late January.
UMass officials announced Feb. 8 that Theta Chi at 496 North Pleasant St. was put on interim suspension “pending investigation by the Student Conduct and Community Standards Office. The chapter has been directed to cease all chapter-related functions.”
“Interim sanctions are levied when there is a perceived need by the dean of students to take actions based on an immediate concern and knowing further investigation needs to occur,” UMass spokesman Edward Blaguszewski said Wednesday.

A number of students at UMass Amherst, which recently went into lockdown following a COVID-19 spike on campus, were referred to the university conduct office for alleged violations of pandemic-related protocols between Jan. 1 and Feb. 5, the school told town officials Monday.
UMass declared the campus "high risk" and suspended all in-person classes after more than 450 positive COVID-19 cases were reported over the last week.
