Human Resources The budget of $218,982 is $17,277 more than the previous year and is attributed to salary increases. Ward 1 Councilor Helen Moon asked the Director of Huma Resources Michael Taylor why there is a line item for Diversity and Inclusion when the city is implementing a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department. Taylor said there will still be an element of DEI that falls under his department despite the new office. We re still going to work very collaboratively with this new office, whether it s on recruitment and retention efforts, or it s on professional development, he explained. And instituting the recommendations on that DEI group had a pretty heavy professional development component and training requirement, not just for city employees, also city boards, commissions, elected officials and so forth.

Key issues
Dog park: A citizens petition, Article 21, requests that the town devise a five-year operational plan for the proposed dog park, including maintenance and waste removal, before any town land is allocated. Article 8 appropriates $1,247,118 of Community Preservation Funds, including $185,000 to help create a dog park on 2.4 acres behind the Brewster Police Station. The Stanton Foundation will contribute $225,000 toward construction. The Friends of the Brewster Dog Park would raise $50,000 to help furnish the $460,000 park.
School choice: Article 27 asks Brewster’s Select Board to ask the Nauset Regional School District to reduce the costs of the School Choice program, freeze the number of School Choice students in the district and add no new ones for the next seven years. The school committee should also reset the tuition fees.

Shelter Island continues to lead the other East End towns in its percentage increase in Community Preservation Funds for the first quarter of 2021, according to numbers released by Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. (I-Sag Harbor).
Shelter Island shows a 191.3% increase in the funding compared with the first quarter of 2020. The town took in $1.34 million for the first three months of 2021 receiving $460,000 for the same months last year.
The money comes from a 2% tax paid by property buyers with most of it being used to acquire and preserve open spaces, while up to 20% can be redirected to water quality improvement projects.
