Burlington police chief to retire
Burlington Police Chief Jeffrey Smythe submitted his letter of resignation Thursday, according to city officials, offering to stay through late spring to help with the transition to a new chief.
“I have served honorably and professionally for nearly eight years and it is simply time for me to pursue other professional interests,” Smythe wrote in the letter.
Smythe went on a short vacation after submitting the letter, but has made plans with the Times-News for an interview early next week.

While Smythe has been known to talk about retirement, his letter this week was a surprise.
