DETROIT, Mich. (May 26, 2021) – Yesterday, the Detroit City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that will set the stage to limit the acquisition and use of surveillance technology by law enforcement and other city agencies. The law will also help limit the impact of the federal surveillance state.
Council President Pro Tem Mary Sheffield spearheaded the
Community Input Over Government Surveillance Ordinance. Under the law, Detroit government agencies are required to create a surveillance technology report before acquiring new surveillance tech outlining how the technology will be used, how data will be stored and shared, and how it could impact privacy.
