not sure we need half a billion dollars for women s health issues. you dialed that back and i was always wondering why did you dial that back? well, first of all, we already fund women s health programs. when i was governor we increased the funding. we have community health organizations across the kin trithat do spectacular work. i was talking about the actual $500 million that goes to planned parenthood. i think that s should be defunded. where that goes is a question that congress has to deal with. i m not suggesting cutting back on women s health clinics. if people got that intention got that from the statement i said, then they re wrong. this is clearly my record and this is what i said when i was in front of 11,000 people. no one there seemed to be surprised or confused about what i said. people do jump on what you say, governor, maybe because of your standing in the polls and the fact they see you as a prohibitive favorite here,
there are many extraordinarily fine community health organizations that exist, federally sponsored community health organizations to provide quality fair for women on a wide variety of health issues. but abortion should not be funded by the government. any government in my mind. welcome back to hardball. that was jeb bush, questioning the need to spend half a billion dollars on women s health issues. he clarified later saying broadly i misspoke, there are countless community health centers, rural clinics and other health organizations that need to be fully funded. but hillary clinton pounced on jeb bush s gaffe. tweeting, you are absolutely, unequivocally wrong. last night in denver, she dug in some more. jeb bush said he s not sure we need half a billion dollars for women s health issues. i m reading it because i want to quote it exactly.
there is this sort of criticism from hillary clinton. in context, i think most people in the auditorium understood what he meant. that we shouldn t be funding planned parenthood, an organization which is violent. and instead we ought to be funding other organizations. and he said off handedly i m not sure about the amount we would need. that we would need that amount. it was not something that caused a stir in the moment. it was clear in context what he was referring to. but as you just referred to, his original sentence was you could take dollar for dollar and give that money, that $500 million that you re giving to planned parenthood, you could give it to other health organizations. he put in that phrase, i m not sure you need half a billion for women s health. you don t think you think he was talking about planned
health organizations that exist. federally sponsored community health organizations to provide quality care for women on a wide variety of health issues. and mr. bush s democratic challenger hillary clinton was quick with a very strong reaction. he s got no problem giving billions of dollars away to the super wealthy and powerful corporations. but i guess women s health just isn t a priority for him. now, i would like to ask him, governor bush, try telling that to the mom who caught her breast cancer early because she was able to get screening in time. was her health not worth the money? jeb bush attempted to clarify some of his remarks after the speech, saying he misspoke. in a statement he said there are countless health organizations that still need to be funded to support all women, particularly low-income health services. he just doesn t want planned parenthood to be one of them. meantime, anti-abortion
women s health issues are overfunded. he explained why he believed the federal government should end the support of planned parenthood. the argument against this is, well, women s health issues are going to be, you re attacking it s a war on women and you re attacking women s health issues. can you take dollar for dollar, although i m not sure we need half a billion dollars for women s health issues, but if you took dollar for dollar, there are many extraordinarily fine organizations, community health organizations that exist, federally sponsored community health organizations to provide quality care for women on a wide variety of health issues. but abortion should not be funded by the government. they issued a followup statement saying i misspoke as there are countless community health centers, rural clinics and other women s health organization that s need to be fully funded. i was referring to the hard to fathom $500 million in federal
