LEWISTON Lewiston-based Community Health Options, the state’s only nonprofit, member-led health insurance organization, has awarded grants to eight Maine nonprofit agencies working in community health, including $5,000 to the New Mainers Public Health Initiative.
New Mainers Public Health Initiative will use the funds to help with outreach to address second-hand smoke exposure currently experienced by New Mainer families in five low-income apartment buildings in Lewiston. Funding will help hire three community health workers who speak Somali, French and Arabic to visit 150 households.
This grant cycle focused on Maine nonprofit organizations working to mitigate some factors that lead to the chronic health conditions and assist Maine people managing chronic illness to be their best selves mentally, physically and emotionally.
