Millions in state capital budget flowing to Kitsap County projects View Comments The Legislature’s $6.3 billion capital budget passed last month includes funding for dozens of Kitsap County projects including school modernization, affordable housing, a community center and money to purchase and preserve land in North Kitsap.  The 2021-2023 capital budget, which funds new and ongoing construction projects across the state, includes $1.8 billion in new appropriations.  The entire property has been valued at about $6.6 million, according to Kitsap County Commissioner Rob Gelder. Capital budget funds will help to purchase the property, which will be split between residential development, affordable housing, public services and open space, Gelder said.

USDA awards $15 million in grants to expand wood products, wood energy markets and community forests

Pierre, SD, USA / DRGNews May 10, 2021 | 6:17 AM The US Department of Agriculture has awarded more than $15 million to fund grant proposals to develop and expand the use of wood products, strengthen emerging wood energy markets and protect community forests. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack made the announcement in Colorado May 7, 2021, while visiting prescribed fire and wildfire recovery areas adjacent to the Roosevelt National Forest Northern Colorado Front Range landscape. The grant funding, delivered through USDA Forest Service programs, will support 60 projects that cover a diverse range of activities from the development of affordable housing to expanding markets for mass timber, biochar, wood energy and other emerging wood products. The grants also include funds to help tribes, local governments and qualified non-profit organizations permanently conserve working forests that benefit communities.

Wyden talks mental health, forest, farms and more during town hall

PENDLETON — Mental health issues and protections for family farms were some of the starter topics during a virtual town hall Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden held Sunday, May 2, for residents of Umatilla, Union and Wallowa counties. The Democrat broached the topic during the first question of the day, asked by Umatilla School District Superintendent Heidi Sipe, about federal support for students as the country rethinks “nearly every aspect of education” following the pandemic. Wyden addressed standardized testing, saying this year it seems best for teachers to address learning loss in the classroom rather than taking time out for standardized testing. He said schools will need additional funding to help students catch up after lost learning opportunities, and pointed out the American Rescue Plan includes funding for schools to do just that through summer learning opportunities and other strategies.
