Last week saw the first two public forums to gather the Democrats running for county executive in the May 2023 primary election, and the race is off to a congenial start.
A candidate running for County Executive intends to establish a program to provide free community college tuition to those who graduate from high schools in the county. Michael Lamb says he would use philanthropic support and the Allegheny Regional Asset District funds to fund the program. He says he would model it after the Pittsburgh Promise, a scholarship fund for eligible Pittsburgh Public Schools graduates.
The Community College of Allegheny County has been selected as one of three colleges and universities in the country to send an experiment into space this summer. Two students and their mentor will study the effects of microgravity on dormant cancer cells. Ultimately they want to know if astronauts in cancer remission are impacted by the space environment. The test will be carried out on the International Space Station. It will be launched this summer.
