WITH many families staying home, it can sometimes be difficult to remember that schools are still open for key workers. Teachers up and down the country are continuing to put themselves at risk of contracting coronavirus by coming to work - and many are going above and beyond to teach their pupils in these difficult times. The Hexham Courant launched its bouquet of the week feature in April to recognise the achievements of people helping others in their community. This week, the award goes to the staff team at Shaftoe Primary School in Haydon Bridge. The school was nominated by the Haydon Bridge Covid-19 Community Care Group. Hayley Turner explained why they chose to shine a light on the team.

Ex-Mayor Georgina Busher, who died on November 24, will be remembered by everyone as a wonderful character, a powerhouse for Bishop’s Waltham and a lady who volunteered for everything. Georgie started life in 1928 with a nanny and a governess. When she was only six years old, her father died, but she cheerfully adapted from running wild in the Lancashire countryside to the civilised pleasures of London museums and zoo visits with her grandfather. Georgie was ‘packed off to boarding school’ by her mother - 14 schools in all, the last St Catherine’s at Bramley. During the Second World War she was sent round to various relatives in ‘safe’ locations. She gave out cigarettes and chocolates to Dunkirk survivors at Bournemouth, was strafed on the Witterings marshes and lived in the large white house used by the Luftwa
