Bratina said on Monday he will not seek re-election, following the announcement that the federal government and the Province of Ontario will co-fund a $3.4 billion LRT system that he has spent years opposing as a councillor and then as the city’s mayor.
Bratina said it is not a decision he can support at the doorsteps in a general election, and so he will walk away from a contest that he is well-placed to win.
“There is a key tradition in our Westminster parliamentary system of government, that when an issue arises that cannot be supported on a matter of principle, one sometimes finds it necessary to take a step like this,” he said.
