Vaccination: Give priority to kidney disease patients, CMA urges Commonwealth countries On By Chioma Obinna As the world weekend marked the 2021 World Kidney Day, President of the Commonwealth Medical Association, CMA, Dr Osahon Enabulele has called on the Commonwealth of Nations to give priority to people living with kidney disease in the COVID-19 vaccination programme. In his message on the 2021 World Kidney Day with the theme: “Living Well with Kidney Disease”, Enabulele said that Kidney disease remains a sign of global health challenge with over 850 million people living with the disease mainly among people in low and middle in some countries.

Doctor who pioneered first open-heart surgery in Singapore dies at 93

SINGAPORE - Dr Yong Nen Khiong, a cardiothoracic and general surgeon who wrote a weekly wine column for The Business Times for 30 years, died at home on Monday (March 15). He was 93. Better known as NK Yong, he was found to have an aorta aneurysm two years ago, but did not have it operated on because of his age. Dr Yong is remembered for pioneering the first open-heart surgery in Singapore in 1965. In 1966, he was appointed foundation professor of surgery and chairman of department of the new Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. He returned to Singapore in 1976 and ran a private surgical practice until he retired in 2004.

500,000 women in Commonwealth countries living with Cervical Cancer, says CMA On By Joseph Erunke A total of 500,000 women in the Commonwealth nations are living with cervical cancer, the Commonwealth Medical Association, CMA, said CMA’s President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, who said this, Monday, in his broadcast to commemorate the 2021 World Cancer Day, expressed fears over increasing cases of the disease among Commonwealth nations. He urged member-states to integrate cancer prevention and treatment services within their frameworks for Universal Health Coverage, as according to him, one woman dies from cervical cancer every five minutes, while 85 per cent of deaths from cervical cancer occur in the low and middle-income countries, with 12 persons dying of cancer every minute.
