In April 1954, as a result of the defection of Vladimir Petrov from the Soviet embassy in Canberra, the Russian diplomatic staff were recalled from Australia and went home, closing the embassy. The Australian embassy staff in Moscow were expelled, and diplomatic relations were not re-established until 1959.
