Faces of the arts shutdown: Eboni Muse: There are days when I just want to sleep in my bed all day

Eboni Muse doesn’t just love to perform for an audience, it’s written in her DNA. The local musical theater actor is the granddaughter of the late Margaret “Margie Ruth” Springer, a longtime singer at Pilgrim Progressive Baptist Church, who was known in her day as “the queen of gospel in San Diego.” Over the past decade, Muse has performed regularly in professional musicals and plays at San Diego Repertory Theatre, New Village Arts, Lamb’s Players Theatre, Intrepid Theatre and Common Ground Theatre, among others. So when all the theater work dried up in March, the 33-year-old La Mesa resident said she fell into a funk.

Review: Common Ground Theatre launches new era with sharp Black Voices plays

Print Common Ground Theatre launched an ambitious new season this month with a trio of plays by Black male playwrights that signaled its unflinching new focus on the contemporary Black experience. Earlier this year, award-winning local actor and director Yolanda Franklin was named executive artistic director of Common Ground. She is the first woman artistic director in the 57-year history of the oldest Black theater company in San Diego and the third-oldest in the United States. Despite the pandemic, Franklin has pushed ahead in planning an ambitious season that launched earlier this month with three filmed plays broadcast over Zoom.

SAN DIEGO – San Diego’s premiere Black theatre, Common Ground Theatre, is proud to announce its 2020-21 season, filled with virtual and outdoor performances around the theme of “Raising Our Consciousness to a Higher Level.” In partnership with Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, Common Ground Theatre’s season seeks to provide a “common ground” for people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds to participate, interact, connect and share their love of theatre. Every month from December through June, Common Ground Theatre will highlight Black voices through short play readings by Black playwrights from San Diego and around the United States.
