because he might end up in an audit. so could you presume from that statement that he wasn t under audit? i presume he s not under audit. and the reason why i bring this up, because i m also the only democrat on this committee that also serves on the committee of ways and means. the chief tax writing committee in the house of representatives and it s the only committee in the house of representatives ha that s jurisdiction to request an american s tax returns and that includes the president of the united states. my constituents need to know whether the president has financial ties that are causing him to protect his own bottom line rather than the best interest of this country. can he be plaqblackmailed becauf his financial and business ventures, including by foreign governments? and i know the opposition is the first thank they re going to ask or say is that he released his financial disclosure forms. but i believe there are other things we can learn from his taxes. do you have an
money back in the hands of taxpayers, but by and large the democrats don t see it the same way. why did disagreement? i don t know what they are looking at. many times when they do talk about where they think that the money is going, when i look at their numbers, their numbers aren t correct. i don t even know why at this point in time they can really give you a scenario. they don t have all the information. i can tell you what we re doing in our ways and means committee is to make sure that those of the middle income and lower income are given relief from taxes. absolutely everybody pays more taxes than what they should. the emphasis is on the middle and lower income. jon: some of the experts have looked at some proposals out there and say it s possible that even some middle class taxpayers could see their taxes increase as a result of this. are you what is your thought on that? again, the numbers they re using. i ve seen these numbers.
are you hopesful you ll be able to work together with democrats? i absolutely believe that. working with the prosolvers caucus and josh s lead, we re taking a position on debt ceiling, i believe, maybe a budget agreement, but being on the committee of ways and means. i m reaching out and saying we want you to be a part of this. that s the way we re going to solve america s problems. congressman reed, you voted to repeal and replace the affordable care act. as you know, the other day the president was meeting with republicans. he said the bill was strictly along partisan minds, was in his words a mean bill. what do you say to a president who is basically throwing a lot of house republicans under the bus? well, i ll let the president speak for himself, but the bottom line is we had to move forward, you re talking about tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands don t have access to
very important in this discussion. and as a member of the permanent member of the select committee on intelligence. congresswoman linda sanchez on the committee of ways and means and subcommittee of oversight. congresswoman tammy duckworth serving on the armed services committee and the committee on government and oversight and government reform. mr. cummings committee. with their leadership and persistence, we will do right by the families of the victims. by the way, two families have communicated with us saying, don t take us down this path again. why is this being done? we hope that we can shine a light on where our focus should be, preventing a benghazi from ever happening again. i told the speaker in a phone call that i just had with him that i m hopeful that ranking member cummings and chairman gowdy can come to better terms on how we proceed.
governor of tennessee. i think there is a good chance here in the house where we do our work that we are going to be able to get a product out before thanksgiving. jon: there has been so much infighting within the republican party. we ll get to more of that on the senate side in a moment. there has been a lot of infighting within your party. can you close ranks and come up with a budget and tax plan? i don t know where the infighting is in the house of representatives because we still have discussions going. we all agree that tax reform is a once in a generation opportunity to give people their money back, the hard-earned taxpayer money they need to have in their pockets rather the government continuing to spend that money so we re working very hard within our committee of ways and means to make sure that we have a product out to our members and they can see that product and we are going to get that product done before thanksgiving. that s our goal. jon: you sell it as putting
