Thirteen Catholic lawmakers in the U.S. Senate voted Monday in favor of a failed attempt to pass a sweeping new abortion law that threatened to override states’ p.
WASHINGTON (CNS) The failure of the U.S. Senate Feb. 28 to advance an extreme measure to establish a legal right to abortion at any stage of pregnancy nationwide is a tremendous relief, said the chairmen of the U.S. bishops pro-life and religious freedom committees.
The bill, which failed by two votes in the Senate, would have codified the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion nationwide and eliminated pro-life laws at every level of government, including including health or safety protections.
(CNS News) In a letter to all 100 senators, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) urged them to oppose the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA), which would legalize abortion in demand nationwide and prohibit nearly all restrictions on the procedure.
