Cumbria County Council appoints new chairman and vice chairman

New chairman and vice chairman of Cumbria County Council have been appointed at this year’s Annual General Meeting. Councillor Tony Markley, who has been a Conservative member for the Solway Coast since 2005, has been appointed as the new chairman. Councillor Andy Connell, a Liberal Democrat member for Appleby, has been appointed as the new vice chairman. Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, today’s AGM took place virtually. Councillor Markley has served the county council for 16 years and was vice-chairman for the past two years. He will be supported during his term of office by his wife and chairman s consort, Denise.

Food support provided for Christmas in Allerdale

Councillor Tony Markley Cumbria County Council s community development team in Allerdale have been hard at work ensuring those in need do not go without this Christmas. The team have been coordinating a Christmas food provision project, aiming to ensure care leavers, families in need of support, those who are homeless, and vulnerable elderly or disabled adults all have access to food this Christmas. The project has been funded by Cumbria Community Foundation, DEFRA, the county council’s Allerdale local committee, and a £5,000 donation from Workington Town Rugby Club - as well as a collection of toys for children. Support groups across Allerdale have worked collectively to use the funding to help as many people as possible at Christmas time.
