Fairless Hills YMCA gets major overhaul

Sitting in the snow-covered parking lot, a giant excavator dug its cupped claw into the side of the YMCA in Fairless Hills last week, ripping down bricks and cinder blocks. After 10 years of fundraising and deliberations, the YMCA was finally tearing down its past and is ready to build its future.   Officials celebrated with a virtual groundbreaking last week as the crane and other heavy equipment worked on the YMCA site in Lower Bucks.    Recorded on video for the groundbreaking, the demolition of the facade of old Y at 601 S. Oxford Valley Road in Bristol Township marks the physical start of a plan long in the making and a celebration of all the YMCA has offered to the community for the past 85 years.

Rachel Thompson, a young attorney from Ambler, so impressed Chief Judge Juan Sanchez of the United States District Court for Eastern Pennsylvania when she clerked for him, that he said he was pleased when Bucks County Solicitor Joseph Khan asked about hiring her as an assistant county solicitor. Sanchez said he was delighted to be given the honor to swear her into her new role working for Bucks County during the county commissioners reorganization meeting Monday at which county Commissioner Chairwoman Diane Ellis-Marseglia was reappointed as chair of the board by Commissioners Bob Harvie and Gene DiGirolamo. Thompson, 26, is a graduate of Villanova Law School. An Ambler native, she plans to move to Doylestown for her new position, which will involve representing the county in cases involving health, human service and employment issues.
