Free security camera program in York receives a lot of interest

We have an update on a new community outreach program we first told you about last week.The city of York is offering free home security cameras to older residents who are feeling unsafe. Police said they received an overwhelming response after the story aired. It s important because I need the people who live here to feel safe in their homes, police Commissioner Michael Muldrow said.Muldrow has heard from dozens of senior citizens throughout York who want a free security camera. Susan McDaniel and her husband are among the first to receive one. A solar-powered camera installed on the side of their home streams video to their cellphone. The story that you did was awesome and putting it out there like you did, helping us circulate and get the word out there, Muldrow said.The camera program is funded through donations. No public money is used. More than 50 families have contacted police since the story first aired.The commissioner said he got great news from the camera supplier.

Significant gun seizure made in York

York officers have made what the police commissioner calls a significant gun seizure.Police said they found a small arsenal Tuesday during a search of a home in the 900 block of South Pine Street. Heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana were also found, police said.The guns include three .40 caliber Glock pistols. One of the pistols was reported stolen, police said.Police also found a loaded AK-47 rifle. Thankfully, rifles like that on the street aren t common, so our officers have been picking up rounds consistent with rounds being fired out of that weapon for months now. We ve been chasing it like a ghost around the community, trying to get ahold of it, Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow said.There has been a recent spike in gun violence in York. Seven people have been shot over the last seven days, and one of the victims died.

Third public forum on citywide surveillance proposal slated for Tuesday York Dispatch A third public forum to discuss a proposed citywide surveillance system in York City will take place Tuesday evening. The forum is a part of a feasibility study for the proposal, which has raised concerns from some city residents and civil rights groups. The event is slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene s York City campus, 350 Chestnut St. The forum will be led by Montez Parker, a consultant who was hired by Better York, a local nonprofit organization. Better York, the city and the York County District Attorney s Office raised more than $30,000 to fund the study, which is expected to be completed by mid-June.

The York City Police Department is proud to say that all eight recommended policy items have been formally adopted and are now written into the police department’s policies, York City Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow said in a March news release. However, the organization behind 8 Can’t Wait says York City stands at three out of the eight as it reviews the updated policy.
